Making the Leap to IP

Q. Does IP-based network video cost more than traditional analog systems?

A.

Not necessarily. In a 2007 study on the Total Cost of Ownership of IP- vs. Analog-based surveillance systems published by BICSI, Inc., the industry association for information transport systems, an IP-based implementation with 40 cameras had a lower TCO than analog-based systems of a similar size. Aside from that, there are significant advantages of an IP system that cannot be offered through an analog system – including better quality images, easier maintenance, increased flexibility, and automated visual monitoring. It is in this additional functionality that the real value of IP is found.

Q. I recognize the value of using IP so that I can network my surveillance infrastructure and realize more strategic benefits, but I already have some newer analog equipment. Do I have to discard that investment?

A.

No! NCS will merge your Analog cameras into an IP system. That is part of our strategic needs analysis and system design phase. It’s an easy first step in making the switch to IP.

Q. How do I protect the bandwidth on my existing network, if we add IP video?

A.

NCS can perform a Network Readiness Assessment, providing an audit of your corporate network to assess the capacity to support IP-based video surveillance systems. Once the audit data is collected, it is analyzed and evaluated with industry knowledge, best practices and vendor application requirements to detail the findings and recommendations. This information is built into a report that is personalized to a company’s needs and reviewed with the key stakeholders.

Q. Isn’t IP-based network video too new?

A.

No. Network video systems have been deployed for over a decade and all current research and development in the industry is IP based. IP is flexible enough to handle the demands of converged technology – voice, data, video and access control. All it takes is working with experts who have specialized IP knowledge.
